Why it matters

Owakudani's visitor area sits beside Owakudani Station, but the volcanic valley, station facilities, shops and the reservation-only nature trail do not share one operating schedule. This is an active volcanic area where gas concentrations, weather, entry controls and ropeway suspensions can change the safe visitor scope at short notice. The current ropeway guidance states that people with asthma or bronchial, respiratory or heart conditions, people using pacemakers, and people who are unwell cannot ride the gas-affected Sounzan–Ubako section. Kanagawa Prefecture separately tells people with listed respiratory or heart conditions or pacemakers to refrain from visiting Owakudani Park because volcanic gas may be life-threatening. Pregnant travelers, newborns or infants, older visitors and others with health concerns should review the current guidance and consider not riding. Read the official volcanic-gas, access and transport guidance before committing to the visit.

How to get to Owakudani

Use Owakudani Station on the Hakone Ropeway. Confirm the live ropeway service, substitute transport, volcanic restrictions and weather conditions before starting the Hakone loop; fixed segment times are intentionally omitted.

03

How long to spend

Allow about 60–120 minutes for the general visitor area as an editorial planning range; the stored 90-minute value is not an operator average. The nature trail is a separate reservation-and-guide program. Do not enter or ride against current health restrictions; gas, weather, crowd controls or transport suspension can shorten or cancel a visit.
